She faced racism while growing up in Los Angeles’ overwhelmingly white, upmarket Hancock Park area. “I was starting to get it”, she said.
KING: Yeah, and I would say not just even jazz royalty. “I know how hard she fought”. He had heard her sing informally at parties.
Rosie O’Donnell, Reverend Al Sharpton and Lenny Kravitz were just some of the other celebrities to pay their respects online.
Cole is survived by her 38-year-old son Robert Adam Yancy.
The singer released twenty three studio albums during her lifetime, in which seven ranked gold and four ranked platinum in the United States. Nat “King” Cole died in 1965, but she sang along with her father’s taped version on the title cut “Unforgettable”.
More important, the album’s success established Natalie Cole as a vocal artist who was as credible a force with jazz aficionados as she was popular with pop music lovers. It featured a duet (‘Unforgettable’) with her father.
Cole’s death was confirmed by publicist Maureen O’Connor. And the voice behind some of the most lovely music. I love Adele. I’m listening to a lot of Spanish music too. Eventually, she was signed to Capitol Records, her father’s label.
She reflect on her health problems in an interview with People magazine around that time. “I owed that to him”.
Yet, again, despite the setback, she came back swinging, securing yet another Grammy nomination, for Best Latin Album, for her 2013 Spanish-language LP, “En Espanol”.

Cole also had an acting career and appeared regularly on television including a memorable 2012 episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race when two finalists had a lip sync battle to her first big hit This Will Be. She also inherited his angel eyes and his velvet-smooth crossover sound.
Her career was soon back on track with her hit cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac”, along with the singles “Jump Start My Heart” and “I Live for Your Love”.
Natalie Cole, who died Thursday at 65, could have easily spent her career looming in or shaking off another singer’s shadow.
Cole was married three times. A first trip to rehab failed, but the second one took – and she remained sober for the remainder of her life. That same year, Cole was arrested in Toronto, Canada, for heroin possession, which she discussed in her autobiography.
Cole underwent a successful kidney transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 2009.
