Sinkhole in Detroit Turned Into Fishing Pond by Residents
They’ve gone fishin’ in Michigan.
Naturally, the people of the area were bothered by the cavernous hole in their road, especially when a nearby water main broke, filling the pit with water.
Sick of the eyesore local residents chose to turn it into a fishing hole, stocking the new pond with carp, blue gill, and goldfish which they feed and care for.
Residents started putting fish into the sinkhole and now, the fish have multiplied.
“It’s been here for nearly four years, and inside of that four years the city has known about it”, resident Sonja Brown told WDIV News. Uncle Zeke plans to clean up the vacant lots on Hull street, and says that the fish pond is an initial step in improving the sparsely populated block. People like watching the fish and feeding them.
Newsnet5.com’s sister station 7 Action News in Detroit is fishing for answers as to why the road went so long without fix . It raises awareness about the original problem of the hole, and the access to the water problem that some of the city’s residents are facing.
Utility firm Detroit Edison has told the broadcaster that it has sent out a crew to investigate the hole for the Detroit Water and Sewage Department. They added fish to the sinkhole.
Officials with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department say they have no record of work being done and no record of calls to have it addressed. The kids then stocked the pond with some of the small fish that they caught.
They said road markings indicate that it is the responsibility of a local utility company.
“We like our fish,” Bolden said, “but honestly we’d like the road fixed.”
