Sir Michael Caine ‘sort of certain’ United Kingdom should quit EU
Michael Caine is the latest star actor to weigh in on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, telling a BBC reporter that black actors should “be patient”.
He also said nonwhite actors should “be patient”. “I thought he was wonderful”.
Pressed on his preference, he said: ‘I sort of feel certain we should come out’.
When his interviewer confirmed that Elba wasn’t in the running for an Academy Award, Caine added: “Well, look at me”. To be fair to those who are upset about the nominations, nobody is arguing that people who were not very good should be nominated. “It took me years to get an Oscar”.
For example, Idris Elba’s stunning performance in Beasts of No Nation (which Caine says he saw) was snubbed.
After returning from acting retirement because “I couldn’t find a television show I wanted to watch everyday”, Sir Michael is starring in new film Youth and has filmed bank heist movie Going In Style with Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin.
The crime was masterminded by 76-year-old Brian Reader from Dartford and it is thought likely Sir Michael, 82, would play Reader, who appeared in court earlier this month pleading guilty to involvement in the raid.
Many famous faces have voiced their support of more diversity in Hollywood, with George Clooney, Mark Ruffalo, Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael Keaton all calling for change.
Stars including Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have announced their plans to boycott the ceremony after it was revealed that the four main acting categories were being contested by all-white actors for the second consecutive year. He then joked that he wasn’t going to “sit there clapping for Leonardo DiCaprio”.
