Six More Women Publicly Accuse Roger Ailes of Sexual Harassment
The sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Fox News channel presenter Gretchen Carlson against the network’s chairman Roger Ailes has intensified, following the publication of new allegations.
Since Carlson filed her suit, however, more than dozen women have contacted her lawyer, Nancy Erika Smith, to describe similar instances of sexual harassment. He said to me, ‘Don’t tell anybody about this. How would that work?’ I was trying to kill time because I didn’t know if he was going to attack me. I’ve got it all on tape.’ I think he knew I was sixteen.
The suit claims the pair met to discuss the discriminatory treatment to which she was subjected, but that Ailes said they ought to have had “a sexual relationship a long time ago… sometimes problems are easier to solve that way”.
Ailes had been President George H.W. Bush’s chief media advisor in 1988, but never had an official role with the RNC, where Boyle eventually worked.
Former model Marsha Callahan, 73, alleged that in ’68 or ’67 Ailes told her to lift her skirt up when she came to his office to speak with him about a possible appearance on The Mike Douglas Show. Ailes was a producer on the syndicated talk program at the time.
Two other women separately told the magazine that Ailes asked them to put on garter belts and model them for him.
Pat, a recent communications graduate, who was told by Ailes in 1975 that she’d have to have sex with him if she wanted to make it.
The request came two days after Carlson sued Ailes in Superior Court in New Jersey, portraying him as a persistent harasser who demoted her and ultimately forced her from Fox News, her employer since 2005, after she rebuffed his advances. In any event, the additional allegations are likely to harm the already faltering reputation of Ailes and Fox News.
The attorneys also fired back at Ailes’ outside legal counsel, Barry Asen, who accused the legal team of “desperately attempting to litigate this in the press because they have no legal case to argue”.
More allegations of sexual harassment are being leveled against Fox News boss Roger Ailes.
But when the complaint was escalated internally at Fox News, Ailes called Carlton a “man hater” and told Carlson she needed to “get along with the boys”. Fox’s parent company, 21st Century Fox, says it is conducting an internal review. “We are hearing from others”.
She said Ailes attorney had declared the latest allegations false only three hours after they were published. How does he know that? Prevailing on that question would remove the case from New Jersey state court and move it into federal court. “Gretchen intends to fight for her right to a public jury trial, a right protected by the discrimination laws and our Constitution”.
Carlson’s original lawsuit detailed a series of incidents at Fox News since 2009. Adding, “This is a retaliatory suit for the network’s decision not to renew her contract, which was due to the fact that her disappointingly low ratings were dragging down the afternoon lineup”. “I am extremely proud of my accomplishments at Fox News and for keeping our loyal viewers engaged and informed on events and news topics of the day”.
