Skarp Laser Razor shaves your mug with freakin’ laser beams
And the promise of a smoother, more pleasant shave has clearly captured the imagination of the Kickstarter community. The prototype is an aluminum razor-shaped gizmo that they say uses a laser to cut (not burn) the hair at skin level for a close shave, and works for all hair colors. Even better, the razor doesn’t require any water – you can just turn it on and mow off all your facial hair easily.
According to the Kickstarter page on the internet Gustavsson has been working in the medical and cosmetic laser industry for three decades.
Morgan Gustavsson invented the IPL (Intense Pulse Light) laser in 1989, which is still a popular method of hair removal treatment. He had the idea for a laser razor in 2001, but the technology wasn’t available. Wavelengths of light had been discovered that could cut through dark hair, but light (or gray) hair was much more challenging to deal with. The chromophores are cut when they’re hit with a particular light wavelength. This new Kickstarter project revolutionizes razors by ditching the traditional blade for a low-powered laser beam. The power of the laser is too low to cause damage. Rather, as you pull the device’s head along your face (or wherever), the laser on its business end fires every time it comes into contact with hair, severing it. Because the head doesn’t have a sharp edge, there’s no scraping involved and absolutely zero risk of cuts.
Because the laser is supposed to last about 50,000 hours and be usable without water, it would be good for the environment as well.
For now Skarp is only waiting for capital to begin order, it has already got preliminary agreements with manufacturers.
The Kickstarter campaign still has 19 days to go, and between the time I started writing this article and right now, it reached the million dollar mark.
