A suspect has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a 23-year-old skateboarder dead at an intersection in San Juan Capistrano, authorities announced Saturday evening. Orange County sheriff’s deputies arrested Andrew Christopher Michaels for a felony hit-and-run. KCBS Cesar Medina died after being hit by a truck, sending him flying 20 feet in the air. Deputies arrived to find Medina lying face down in the first lane of eastbound Del Obispo Street.
On Saturday evening, OCSD traffic investigators obtained information that led them to Michaels’ home in Laguna Niguel.
Based on witnesses’ statements and evidence collected at the crash site, it was apparent that Cesar Medina was in a crosswalk when he was struck by the vehicle, the Sheriff’s Department said. He was on his way to visit his girlfriend, according to family members.
The suspected driver, 19-year-old Andrew Christopher Michaels, was arrested Saturday night, police said.
KCBS Jennifer Medina, a nurse, was working Friday night when her doomed brother was rushed in following a hit-and-run accident. He died at the hospital at 10:45 p.m., according to an Orange County Coroner press release.
In a unusual twist of fate, Medina was brought to the same hospital where his sister works in registration. When she found it, she saw it belonged to her brother, Cesar Andres Medina, 23.
“Everything just collapsed. I just couldn’t hold it together”, Medina said as she burst into tears.
His sister, Jennifer Medina, was working a busy shift at the hospital when her 23-year-old brother was brought in unresponsive and not breathing.
Cesar’s aunt Mary Floyd had also appealed for the alleged hit-and-run driver to take responsibility for the tragedy. Many of Medina’s friends stayed at the memorial, located at Del Obispo Street and Paseo Carolina, through the midnight hour.
