Skydiver Survives Insane 25000ft Jump Without a Parachute
American Luke Aikins leapt into the void at 25,000 feet on Saturday (July 30) with no parachute or wingsuit, becoming the first skydiver to land safely on the ground in a net.
As soon as he landed, cheers erupted, and he went running to hug his wife Monica and his 4-year-old son Logan who were watching the fall.
“I’m nearly levitating, it’s incredible”, he said after the jump.
“If I wasn’t nervous I would be stupid”, he said ahead of the jump Saturday, according to The Guardian. Then, the three accompanying skydivers opened their chutes and seemed to rise up away from Mr Aikins, as he fell alone.
About an hour before his jump, Aikins was told by the Screen Actors Guild that he could not complete the stunt without wearing a parachute.
Aikins appeared to soar effortlessly above the California desert, arms extended for about two minutes. “The guys wrapping me up and helping me do this, it was awesome”.
When his friend Chris Talley came up with the idea of the jump two years ago, Aikins turned it down cold.
He’s performed over 18 000 jumps and his latest is the most freaky! He’s been racking them up at several hundred a year ever since. He has now become the first person to pull off something like this and is probably going to hold the record to himself for a considerable amount of time. His family owns Skydive Kapowsin near Tacoma, Washington.
The outlet says SAG-AFTRA, a TV labor union, warned Fox officials that the stunt would be too unsafe to show if Aikins didn’t wear a parachute.
He has also provided advanced skydiving training to some of America’s elite military special forces.
