SLO’s first Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated with sunrise ceremony
Davenport City Council passed a proclamation to honor Indigenous People’s day along with Columbus day.
The Aspen Daily News reports council members Monday unanimously approved the resolution implementing the Indigenous Peoples Day, which supporters say would be used as an opportunity to celebrate native cultures.
State Rep. David Bowen, D-Milwaukee, announced his legislation that would officially make the second Monday in October a day to honor Native Americans while visiting an Indian Community School.
Many Italians who migrated to the USA initially had a rough time. Columbus Day is already one of the most inconsistently celebrated.
The Bay Area is, of course, Ohlone land, and they and other California Native groups stand with us today. Protesters said the Italian explorer should not be celebrated.
The president said that ‘on Columbus day, we honor the skilled navigator and man of faith, whose courageous feat brought together continents and has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams and convictions – even in the face of extreme doubt and tremendous adversity’.
It also asks the city and county to participate in an annual celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

According to the September article, “Christopher Columbus and Fake History”, in Columbia, the Knights of Columbus magazine, Columbus Day is a national holiday. “Today’s a day to learn about that for all of us and celebrate it”.

While some would say the language and histories of Alaska Natives have been fading away, Soboleff feels differently, especially after seeing the children dancing Monday. “The first American? No, not quite/ But Columbus was courageous, and he was bright”. “By having Indigenous People’s Day, this will be a way to recognize UTEP’s indigenous population”.
Festivities to commemorate Salt Lake City’s first Indigenous Peoples Day in the books took place outside the downtown library and featured traditional dances, songs and prayers, as well as some contemporary celebrations, such as DJ Beeso, a Navajo originally from New Mexico, who manned the turntable.
Ralph Arellanes, chairman of the activist group Hispano Round Table of New Mexico, said that as a Hispanic he supports Columbus Day.
“There’s so much history to be learned”, Caulfield said, “and not often is that history written in our textbooks”.
“We would like to see stronger ties with the Tigua Ysleta del Sur and Mescalero Apache peoples, for instance”, Shepherd said.
