Sloane Stephens claims ASB Classic trophy
American fifth seed Sloane Stephens has defeated unseeded German Julia Goerges 7-5 6-2 to win the ASB Classic in Auckland.
After yesterday’s wash out saw her semifinal with Wozniacki stretch over two days and require completion earlier today, Stephens showed no signs of fatigue in dispatching Goerges 7-5 6-2 in little more than an hour.
But as the first set progressed, the contest tightened up and both had chances to break serve.
The 22-year-old won a narrow first set before cruising through the second to score a 7-5, 6-2 victory over the World No. 50.
“Finally. I’m done”, Stephens said with a laugh after being asked what it felt like after hitting her final winning shot.
When Stephens served out the opening set, it was the first set she had taken off the former world No. 1 in their six meetings.
A lover of Indian food, Stephens will celebrate by going to the restaurant she had frequented all week for dinner. Stephens converted the third of three break points in the game, then served out the set and gained control of the match. A fine passing shot victor from Stephens sealed the break and the 6-5 lead. Only moments after completing her win she took a call courtside from her grandfather who was watching the match at home in Florida with Stephens’ grandmother, brother and uncle.
“I can’t really complain with the way I played here to start the year with a new team”, Goerges said.
