Small plane lands on I-595 in Broward County
Commuters got quite the surprise Thursday when a plane had to make an emergency landing on I-595 during the morning rush hour.
The pilot tells NBC 6 that he ran out of fuel and was forced to make the emergency landing, and did his best to avoid traffic in doing so.
It the second plane to land in days after another motorist spotted a Piper Cherokee land on the road ahead as he waited at a red light.
The FAA is en route to the scene and will investigate the landing.
The plane was on its wheels and there didn’t appear to be any obvious damage. Mark Wysocky says this may have been a first on I-595. “It was a good day for a bad thing to happen”.
The pilot, identified as Scott Richmond, was not injured.
The plane was registered to Gary Hill of Nashville, Tenn., records showed, but Richmond said he recently purchased the aircraft from Hill. He waved to Sky 10 and could be seen sitting on a wing of the plane.
Why the pilot landed on the interstate wasn’t immediately clear.
Sgt. Wysocky said I-595 was the only highway in South Florida that did not have an emergency landing until now. Richmond was the only person on the plane.
Authorities reported that the aircraft hit a vehicle, according to the FAA. Check back for more information.
