Smashing! Twitter Reacts to Serena Williams’ Wimbledon Win
“It’s super exciting”. If she wins the U.S. Open in August, Williams will become the first player to sweep all four majors in the same season since Steffi Graf in 1988. It was an awkward and horrific start to the world number one. She will be looking to tie with another Graf achievement – 22 Grand Slam titles – which will leave her only two short of Margaret Court’s 24.
“I feel great”, said Williams.
Muguruza would at least admit “I brush my teeth at the same time, I get out of bed with the same leg”, to underline her winning Wimbledon routine.
“I’ve been trying to win four in a row for 12 years, and it hasn’t happened”.
Williams offered her rivals an ominous assessment of how long she can continue to dominate the world stage, revealing the desire to keep on “reinventing” her training regimes. “She could have lost so many matches at Australia, at Roland Garros, at Wimbledon, and she every time found a way, but it’s a tremendous effort, tremendous”. Since then, she won last year’s US Open and this year’s Australian and French Opens before completing the set at Wimbledon.
One of the keys to her longevity?
Williams and Muguruza have history already with three cracking matches at Grand Slam level.
Regardless of her defeat, Muguruza, 21, has emerged as one of the brightest young stars on the women’s tour after a bravura display in her first Grand Slam final appearance that often left Williams rattled.
The American has won the U.S. Open title the past three years at Flushing Meadows.
Serena also revealed her lucky charm for the tournament – a dress she had packed to wear at the annual champions’ ball in case she ended up with the trophy. “But I am really happy”.
Despite the occasion, it was the Venezuelan-born Muguruza who began the sharper.
“We’re so fortunate to still be playing, we feel just really overjoyed”. So she’s nowhere near the power rankings. “… To me, she could arguably be the greatest athlete of the last 100 years”. She doesn’t have a challenger, ‘ Davenport said.
“With Serena you have to do everything flawless”, Mancisidor told a pair of reporters.
“You guys helped me get through it, I heard all you guys, all the “I love yous”. But for being in the first final at 21, nothing to (criticize)”.
Muguruza saved a match point and converted on her fifth break point to draw within 5-4. Yet, Sharapova earned nearly $2.5 million more than Williams past year.
Williams was broken in her opening service game, but she broke her opponent twice at the end of the set to win four straight games and take the lead.
Serena Williams has won her sixth Wimbledon crown after overcoming a stiff challenge from Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
The match was a lot closer than the scores suggest.
After winning a marathon first set tiebreaker, she won the third set 6-2 to progress.
Williams has been accompanied by the rapper Drake for much of her run to the title here, while Vogue editor Anna Wintour sat in Williams’ player box on Saturday, as well. She can open up the court by creating angles or can take it up the line.
Andy Murray watched Saturday’s match from the stands.
Martina Hingis is a Wimbledon champion for the first time since 1998.
She completed the fabled “Serena slam” – holding all the major championships simultaneously – in front of a frenzied Centre Court, starting with three double-faults in the first game and nearly blowing a 5-1 lead in the second.
