Smith has plates, screws put in jaw
In making his first public comments two days after punching and breaking Smiths jaw during an altercation in the Jets locker room, Enemkpali referred only to something that happened, spoke for just 45 seconds and declined to take any questions.
Enemkpali, who was released by the Jets immediately after the punch, was picked up by the ex-Jets coach Rex Ryan for his Buffalo Bills. You never know how players will respond to injuries, or what will happen to their roster spot while they are out. He went on to say it was not his intention to harm anyone and that he should have walked away from the argument.
“Enemkpali entered the NFL in 2014 as a sixth-round (210th overall) draft pick of the New York Jets”. Coach Todd Bowles called it a “sucker punch”, but sources confirmed Smith might have provoked Enemkpali by pointing a finger in his face.
“I want to thank everybody for being here today”, Enemkpali said. “I look forward to being a good team-mate, accountable player and accountable team-mate to this organization”. “Shortly after getting the Bills job, he wondered out loud to friends whether the Jets would be open to trading Smith to Buffalo”. If Enemkpali were to sign with a different team, he could face discipline under the league’s policy, as this is considered an incidence of workplace violence. If the Jets had released Smith, too, would the Bills have picked him up?
Jackson also said he had no qualms with Ryan bringing yet another player to the team who comes with some baggage, á la Richie Incognito, Percy Harvin, and rookie Ronald Darby.
First, let’s get a quick rundown of the situation: Smith was supposed to attend Enemkpali’s football camp. “But we also recognize that with what we are building around here that this guy could help us win”.
But no. If you thought that, then you clearly don’t know former Jets coach and current Bills coach Rex Ryan.
As Clark said, Smith didn’t deserve to be punched – and certainly not forced out for half of the season in what many consider a make-or-break year – but it sounds like he didn’t act responsibly. Ultimately Smith could not make it due to a personal matter, and after saying he would reimburse Enemkpali, never did.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, replacing the injured Smith, played one drive, going 2 of 3 for 16 yards and guiding the Jets to a field goal.
Whaley said hes reserving judgment on what happened in New York. “We’ll see how everything works out, but I’m excited to have him”, Jackson said. “We can do better”.
