Smith hits record-breaking 164, puts it down to ‘luck’
The Australian team get in position for their official team photo at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After a wayward display from New Zealand in the middle and latter overs, Southee’s experience would be a welcome tonic.
After New Zealand lost Guptill, their hopes of chasing down the hefty target in Sydney faded.
New Zealand’s protocol in those situations is that captain Kane Williamson “generally looks to the guy square on in terms of the height”. It’s these problems New Zealand will look to address in the crucial second game.

December 3 (ANI): Ahead of the three-match Chappell-Hadlee ODI series against Australia starting at the SCG from tomorrow, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has said that his side would focus on playing their best, and insisted they can beat anyone if they succeed in doing so.
The first match is in Sydney on December 4, followed by Canberra on December 6 and Melbourne on December 9. New Zealand may also wonder if their batting order could be strengthened by the inclusion of Henry Nicholls.
Cummins has battled with injury in recent times, but is set to help lead the home side’s bowling attack on Sunday. It bodes well for Australia, who are undergoing a transition and aren’t quite the impregnable powerhouse they have been in ODI cricket.
Questioned about how Australia had approached preparing for the relatively unknown Ferguson, Smith said that ultimately it was crucial to do the fundamentals well regardless of a bowler’s identity.
“I don’t think the unsettled nature of the test side will carry over to the one-day side”, Hesson said on Thursday. Needless to say, it will be a great opportunity for the newly included players to perform and get noticed.

He should have been out to Trent Boult on 14 with replays showing that Black Caps captain Kane Williamson made a major blunder by not reviewing an unsuccessful appeal for lbw.
“We are all aware that we have to rotate from one form or another on a weekly basis and that’s just part of being an global cricketer”.
“To replace those [players] is a challenge…”
Imagine my surprise when I read that Trevor Chappell fears for the future of the series named in his honour.
Prime Minister John Key resigned, Black Cap Colin Munro’s bat snapped in half, and Australian captain Steve Smith was gifted plenty of chances on his way to a record-breaking ton in the Chappell-Hadlee trophy series opener.
