Snead State Welcomes Displaced ITT Students
The University of Arizona and Pima Community College have announced that they will not accept credits from the now-closed ITT Technical Institute.
Quesnel, like all ITT students, will lose her course credit if she enrolls in a traditional college or university.
ITT said it was forced to permanently close its campuses nationwide because it was losing essential revenue due to government actions to reduce the company’s access to millions of dollars in federal loans and grants.
“Tennessee’s Community Colleges and the TCATs have worked quickly to provide options for ITT Tech students”, said TBR Interim Chancellor David Gregory.
Students who aren’t interested in transferring will be given loan forgiveness.
“We just started the outreach, but already we have seen a number of ITT students start communications with staff at our Ivy Tech campuses”, Fanter said. The parallel programs indicate that students impacted by the recent closures may be able to pick up where they left off, assuming they are in good academic standing.
“My recruiter asked me, ‘Do you want to work at McDonald’s the rest of your life?'” White said.
The college will sit down with those students and figure out how to transfer their credits over.
In their letter addressed to President Barack Obama and Education Secretary John King Jr. posted online Wednesday, the former students write that they are taking part in the “debt strike”, which is organized by Debt Collective, to “begin to collect on your obligation to erase [the debts]”.
The roughly 100 former ITT Tech students are hoping public pressure will force the Obama administration to act. “We are committed to ensuring that the individuals who are affected by this closure benefit from every available state resource so they can get the skills and training they need to succeed in the new Virginia economy”.
