Sneak Peek: “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors”
After all, it’s airing just one week after racists were taking to Twitter to disparage NBC’s superb staging of “The Wiz”, a live musical with an all-black cast.
No surprise, it’s Jordan Smith. Thus, ending Adele’s five-week reign. She’s seen in both of those parts, introducing the movie from the Dollywood theme park she established in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., not far from where she grew up.
The family’s tradition is that the older kids help mom tend to the new ones, and the rambunctious Dolly – already an aspiring singing star, who colorfully quotes her dad by telling her mom, “You may be brown-headed, but you was born with a red-headed temper” – is beyond enthusiastic about the prospect of the new addition.
Before The Voice can really dive into the meat of the episode, season 3 victor Cassadee Pope opens the show with her song “I Am Invincible”.
Finally, Carson Daly has all of the Top 9 join him on stage. She is more than convincing as the headstrong youngster who is determined to be a big star someday and has a smart answer for anyone who tries to tell her what to do. But I had something better than any research … His spot in the finale has seemed guaranteed since the Blind Auditions when he blew everyone away with his performance of Sia’s “Chandelier”.
Dolly Parton has written and recorded hundreds of songs over the past 50 years.
“Well, sure I am, Gran’pa, but do I have to look like hell to get there?”
If only the words she speaks had even the least bit of credibility.
After a quick commercial break, the show returns for a performance from guest Dolly Parton.
“Folks have been telling me since the ’70s that “Coat of Many Colors” would make a good movie, and the timing finally felt right to me”, Parton said of the hit country ballad based on her life. “I just think, ‘I’m on Dolly Parton Parkway!'” “As a child, I was never that cute”. We’re all at each other’s throats these days, but wait – what’s that gentle guitar melody comin’ from the misty Tennessee holler? I guess it will speak to different viewers in different ways.
Davis sang her version of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House, and Seabaugh sang his version of “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw. He projected a little more swagger than usual. Next to be saved was Team Blake Shelton‘s Emily Ann Roberts. “Dolly’s confident. She’s secure in who she is”. She gets into fights, she steals, she skips school, and she storms into church with her face garishly painted in lipstick and eye-shadow to belt out a gospel tune. “So I was a huge fan”.
Christmas specials share air time this week with a preview of another midseason sitcom and a movie based on a Dolly Parton song. As he does those heartbreak songs so beautifully, hopefully he won’t have to keep getting his heart broken to keep us listening.
