Snow totals at Washington ski areas
WSDOT says crews worked throughout the night performing avalanche control as well as working to clear to road of snow, spin outs and collisions.
In addition to Stevens Pass, several alternate routes to Eastern Washington are available, including Highway 12 over White Pass, Highway 14, and Interstate 84, which goes through Oregon.
Crews have also shut down Highway 2 over Stevens Pass because of weather conditions.
A WSDOT blog post says the amount of snow that has fallen on Snoqualmie Pass in the past week is more than a quarter of what would typically fall all winter.
A 4:40 p.m. Amtrak train from Seattle to Spokane showed one ticket available as of 1 p.m. Thursday: A $751 Superliner Bedroom with two bunks and an in-room shower and toilet.
Stevens and White passes were open Thursday morning.
But with avalanche dangers and falling trees, WSDOT announced Thursday morning that the pass was closed indefinitely.
“It’s closed for public safety because of the heavy snow in the avalanche chutes”, said DOT spokeswoman Summer Derrey. “Bring chains and be prepared to put them on”.
Between 10 to 20 inches are expected to fall in the mountains tonight, creating hazardous conditions for travelers on Interstate 90, where chains or four-wheel drive are required in both directions. Officials haven’t said when the interstate will open for those heading west.
But few holiday travelers were waiting at the plaza, she said.
