Also on Saturday morning, there will be a coffee morning between 10-12 noon at Dunn Memorial Hall, in support for Royal British Legion Scotland, Poppy Scotland and Soldiers Off the Street Scotland.
“We’re not an old boys’ club, we’re here for all veterans, and we’d love it if they came down and participated, or even just to meet them”, said Bob Brommeland, Legion treasurer and co-chair of the poppy drive.
According to The Royal British Legion there is “no right or wrong way to wear a poppy”, and it is a “matter of personal choice whether an individual chooses to wear a poppy”. “Although we own the copyright to the poppy, there’s stalls and websites selling similar products and we don’t get a penny”.
Fusilier Rigby’s mum Lyn also travelled down from Manchester for the private service. The 60-year-old now works as a primary fitter with Western Power.
He added: “It was particularly good to see so many cadets, Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows there, remembering the sacrifices made by so many people to safeguard the freedoms that we sometimes seem to take for granted”.
Liverpool vice-captain James Milner said: “It’s really important that the team and the fans have the opportunity to pay their respects together at Anfield this weekend and remember all of those who lost their lives serving their country”.
“A lot of the people coming in aren’t military”.
THE poppy is a symbol to unite all Britons, regardless of religion, a senior Muslim leader said.
“The First and Second World War were exactly that, a fight for survival against ideologies that wanted to divide us”.
Veteran Ray has had a few competition for his usual “pog” over the years.
“I was told by a customer at Sainsbury’s that they were proud I was representing the charity (in Luton)”.
“As long as I can stand up or, if it comes to it, someone can push me up here in a wheelchair, I’ll do it”.
I have been involved for several years, and have always hosted parts of the service.
And her efforts have galvanised an army of volunteers this year, many first-time volunteers.
