Sofia Vergara lends support to humiliated Miss Universe runner-up Ariadna Gutierrez
With a completely unreal ending, Burger King did their best to troll the Miss Universe competition after they took the crown off Miss Colombia to give it to Miss Philippines.
A geography question posed to Miss Teen USA third runner-up Lauren Caitlin Upton in 2007 yielded what might just be the most memorable – or at least memeable – televised pageant moments of all time. It was a letdown when the host said he made a mistake.
“Adriana Gutierrez was Miss Universe for four and a half minutes”, Colombia’s Caracol news network headlined a story about the bungle on the front page of its website. “Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!” I hope that you can forgive me.
From President Juan Manuel Santos to Miss Colombia’s relatives in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla, millions of Colombians who tuned in for Sunday’s pageant screamed joyously when it was announced that Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo had won this year’s crown.
Earlier, during the pageant when she was asked about the U.S. reopening a military base in the Philippines, she said the two nations have always shared a good relationship with each other and due to colonisation, the Philippines still has the United States culture.
So was Harvey’s Miss Universe gaffe amusing or stupid?
Harvey later misspelled the names of both contestants’ countries when he apologized after the show to them on Twitter. He has since deleted those tweets and updated with the correct spellings.
Host Steve Harvey while making the announcement claimed that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, was the new Miss Universe. “Listen folks let me take charge of this”, Harvey said. I will take responsibility for this. As well as the wonderful contestants. “They were all unbelievable”, Harvey wrote later.
Even Donald Trump has weighed in on the controversy. “Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines”.
So while Steve is at home pacing around and thinking, “Man, I can’t believe I did that”, the rest of us can enjoy his infectious laugh with a few of the funniest “Family Feud” moments of the past five years… I think I’d make ’em a co-winner.
