‘Solid’ Thanksgiving weekend at box office
The film has had only a 49.7% drop.
Meanwhile, for the second time this year and the second time ever, a Pixar movie opened at No. 2 instead of No. 1.
But the fact that it limped to the finish line should send a clear message to other movie producers who have eagerly jumped on the young adult book adaptation bandwagon in recent years: Fans are exhausted of the “part 2” trend.
The Hunger Games franchise’s final film, Mockingjay Part 2, opened on November 20, 2015 with its domestic box office actually less than any of the other Hunger Games movies.
“The Hunger Games” finale retained its box office lead in North America, outdrawing three new releases including Pixar’s second movie this year, a “Rocky” sequel and a fresh take on Frankenstein. This weekend turns the box-office slightly creepy as a horror-themed Christmas flick “Krampus” hits theaters. “Pixar has always been a brand that is for all audiences”. The film has grossed $176.13 million domestically. Perhaps this smaller gap means it’ll do a lot better for a lot longer than most expected.
Look for Mockingjay to repeat with strong holds by The Good Dinosaur and Creed. It was moved a final time to Thanksgiving. This week we get two movies that are a little unexpected.
“The Good Dinosaur” had a troubled production history.
Overseas openings were also softer for The Good Dinosaur.
The Good Dinosaur also grossed $28.7 million in foreign ticket sales for a worldwide total of $84.3 million. Michael B. Jordan co-stars with Stallone as Apollo’s son, Adonis.
The latest James Bond movie, Spectre, and The Peanuts Movie close out the Box Office top five, respectively. Fox’s cume to date is $116.8M.
The Night Before finished in 6 place with $8.2 million. It’s the second film by Max Landis to recently bomb at the box office, but it’s not really his fault.
Spectre fell to fourth this weekend, grossing $12.89 million.
The Martian rounded out the top ten with the best hold by a non expanding movie.
Audiences had their pick of genres over the crowded Thanksgiving weekend. The film grossed just $3.4 million since its Wednesday opening. The Fox release opened on 2,797 screens but only made $2.35 million. Reviews were negative and there was never any consumer demand for this one. “It was followed by “The Good Dinosaur” with a record of $67.9 million on its weekend countdown”. Opening Friday, Danish Girl debuted to $181,000 from four theaters in NY and Los Angeles for a solid location average of $45,221. Reviews have been good, but not stellar for the Focus release.
