Solo decides to end her season with NWSL’s Seattle Reign
As the New York Post reports, Solo’s banishment has been linked to remarks she made about the Swedish football team at the Rio Olympics, describing the Scandinavians as “a bunch of cowards” after they knocked the Americans out of the Olympics.
The announcement of Solo’s national team suspension threw her status with the Reign into flux for multiple reasons.
Solo was allowed to miss last weekend’s Reign game while on “personal leave”. Haley Kopmeyer took over for Solo in goal and the Reign won 3-1.
Sunil Gulati, the president of U.S. Soccer, told the AP that Solo’s comments were “unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players”.
Goalkeeper Hope Solo has chose to end her season with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.
“Mentally, I am not there yet”.
“While disappointed that Hope will not return to Reign FC this season, we understand and respect her decision”, Harvey said in a club release.
The U.S. was knocked out of the Games in the quarterfinal by Sweden. In 2015, Stevens and Solo were pulled over in southern California driving a usa soccer team van. Brazilian fans booed her mercilessly and shouted “Zika!” every time she touched the ball. “17 f***ing years and it’s over!”
Hope Solo is consoled by her husband, Jerramy Stevens.
The former Seattle Seahawks tight end later pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and four years on probation. Solo was sent home early from the tournament.
Solo will get three months’ severance pay from U.S. Soccer, which also paid her salary in the NWSL.
The controversies have tainted Solo’s legacy in the net. She’s earned more than 200 USWNT caps, and earlier this summer became the first goalkeeper, male or female, to have posted 100 global shutouts. She’s in the twilight of her career, and taking months off from competitive matches would make a return hard. The U.S. won the World Cup for its third title in soccer’s premier event.
