Some GMs skeptical Browns will select Mayfield with No. 1 pick
This year’s deep draft at quarterback lacks just one thing: a consensus top pick.
Cleveland had been enamored with Mayfield’s skillset ever since the draft process started. Not since the team drafted Jim Kelly back in 1983 have the Bills invested such a high pick in the quarterback position.
The report notes that Cleveland doesn’t want to move down too much. That left them without a first round choice this year, but Brett Veach, the team’s new general manager, has been vocal about his desire to trade up, potentially into the first round.
Will the Patriots use both of their first-round picks?
Expect there to be a flurry of transactions come draft night. Overall, this year’s draft class is said to be very strong in the middle rounds, so it could be a situation where Belichick sees great value in picking in the second and third rounds. They’ve already traded up from the No.21 pick, and they probably sent Tyrod Taylor to the Browns with drafting a quarterback in mind. So now teams are faced with a decision about Josh Allen. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was told Mayfield is “definitely” in the running to be the No. 1 overall pick.
The Cleveland Browns tabbed Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield as their quarterback of the future. Hogwash, say Allen, Rosen, Mayfield and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson. Most young defensive backs take time to be groomed into the NFL.
Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer believes the Jets are zeroed in on Josh Rosen.
What Will the Packers Do?
The Mayfields were big fans of Favre and the Green Bay Packers while growing up in Texas. This also indicates how important a reliable pass rusher is in the National Football League and how valued they are. Still, the need for a receiver looks to be a top priority and, if Calvin Ridley falls to them, he’d arguably be the best player available.
One of those quarterbacks, Josh Allen from Wyoming, was at one point a rumored favorite to go no. 1 overall.
Those picks belong to the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers, respectively.
Why he’s flawless: The Patriots so badly need an athletic and versatile linebacker. They also have players like Malcolm Mitchell and Phillip Dorsett, the latter of whom could be the replacement for Brandin Cooks.
Staying at 14, the Packers have a chance at one of those three, but they’re definitely better off trading up.
Whatever quarterback the Browns pick (presuming they take one) is going to have to fit into Jackson’s offensive scheme, so his input appears somewhat important.
