Some Iowa students stage walking to protest Trump victory
Many expressed anger and disappointment, and said they plan to fight Trump’s agenda, including building a wall at the Mexican border and not letting Muslims into the country. “How can we help everybody come to a place where we can be united, and we can create a future that can create a better life for all of us?” Another student held a sign calling for the rights of several marginalized groups with the words, “Gay Power”. “That’s not going to change”.
The Oakland protest grew to about 250 people by late Tuesday. There was one reported injury when a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Highway 24.
Hundreds of West Seattle High School students that staged a walkout Wednesday morning to protest Donald Trump as president-elect were joined by administrators. The last Republican presidential candidate to win MA was Ronald Reagan in 1984.
“Last night, I couldn’t sleep well”, said Martinez, who spoke through an interpreter. “There is an entire section of his country that supports him”.
“It’s time to advocate for what we feel is right”, one student said into a megaphone, according to a live stream of the demonstration on the social media app Periscope. The student-run campus newspaper, the Pitt News, tweeted about an event titled “Emergency Meeting: Let’s Unite to Stop President Trump”. At one point, a lone Trump supporter was chased across Pioneer Courthouse Square and hit in the back with a skateboard before others intervened.
“We’re all mad about Trump’s election”.
“We are here to remind each other that we stand together”, said Kate, 15, a freshman.
In her concession speech to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton had this to say to young people: “And to the young people in particular, I hope you will hear this”.
“I think we should lower the voting age”, Teran-Reiley said.
The protest appears to be organized by Urban Leadership students, according to a message sent to district staff Wednesday. A male student countered, “don’t go telling me America is the land of the free and the home of the fearless, because I don’t believe that no more”.
A few dozen Boulder High School students walked out of class, some carrying anti-Trump signs. Some students cried and spoke in Spanish. “It’s unfortunate, but it’s attractive”. “I think it hit me when I walked into the elevator of my dorm and I saw a girl crying”.
