Some military vets tweet support for Kaepernick’s protest
Kaepernick’s 49ers play the San Diego Chargers tonight.
It would be no surprise to National Football League fans if cameras are pointed in the direction of Kaepernick as the pregame events take place.
US military service members have taken to social media outlets to defend Kaepernick, some agreeing with his anger toward police brutality while others simply support his right to freedom of speech. His actions were considered being insulting to those who made sacrifices for the country.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) reacts as he enters the field at Kezar Stadium. Kaepernick scored a 38 on the Wonderlic Test, putting him near the top of his peers when it comes to intelligence, but obviously his knowledge of techniques in raising awareness about issues facing minorities is lacking. Kaepernick isn’t the first person to make a public stand against the national anthem, however; Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf lodged his own protest in the 1996 season, a time when it didn’t gather quite so much attention.
But that was balanced on Wednesday by the warm wishes from thousands of military personnel, whose #VeteransforKaepernick hashtag was trending after many tweets of support. The quarterback has snubbed the anthem during previous preseason games and has stated that he is protesting police brutality against African-Americans.
Americans who serve in the military are by no means a monolithic group.
Johnson, who represents more than 240,000 active law enforcement officers, called Kaepernick wearing the socks disrespectful, according to USA Today. I’m a vet. I care about people’s right to take a stand.
“We had him come in, to sit down and have a conversation, and the conversation was about, the one thing that we have in this life is freedom of choice, and with that choice comes consequences”.
Kaepernick has said that his controversial stance is not directed towards people in the military.
“I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country”, Kaepernick told the media Sunday, according to Fox5.
I have friends and members of my family now serving in the armed forces. “And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone”. “That’s not happening. People are dying in vain because this country isn’t holding their end of the bargain up”.
