Some Missouri GOP delegates upset, disappointed by Cruz
New Jersey governor Chris Christie criticized Ted Cruz during a speech to delegates at the Republican National Convention this morning, at around the same time that Cruz’s campaign manager said Christie “turned over his political testicles long ago”. Hillary Clinton is set to snatch attention from Republicans by naming her running mate in advance of the Democratic convention, with Virginia Sen.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has issued a statement lamenting Friday’s deadly shootings in Germany.
Some of the delegates continued to applaud Cruz’s talking points, but others broke into cheers of “USA, USA”, after one of the delegates, Geraldine Sam of Lamarque, Texas, demanded to know why Cruz pledged to support the eventual nominee, but now refuses to do so. And don’t take my vote for granted because you lied to me. In response to the chants of “we want Trump”, Cruz quipped that he appreciated the enthusiasm from the NY delegation.
“Vote your conscience”, he said, as the room erupted in jeers as pockets of people chanted, “We want Trump!”
“To see the Donald Trump whips going up and down aisles and areas and telling people to start booing, which coincidentally was nearly the same kind of timing as when Donald Trump got there, it’s just sickening to me”.
“I’d read the speech before he delivered it”, King explained. They knew exactly what I was going to say.
Cruz was thanking his supporters and noted that their campaign had nearly defeated 16 talented candidates but fell one short. But as it drew to a close, and it became apparent that Cruz would not offer the nominee a full-throated endorsement or urge his hundreds of delegates to vote for Trump come November, boos echoed across the arena.
“I am doing what millions of Americans are doing”, he said. He says Hillary Clinton is a crooked liar and needs to be in prison.
The differences between Cruz and Trump were based in personality and policy.
“I’m going to have to do a lot of searching in myself and prayer, and see: Do I surrender to this type of bully tactic or do I keep fighting?”
He says no matter what people think of him as a Republican, “If you’re a great believer in the Constitution, you have no choice”.
He said he believes that holding candidates responsible applies to everyone, and he does not intend to “go out and throw rocks at Donald”. He said Cruz would have been better off staying away and sending a video message like the one from Florida Sen.
“Jeff, did you email them to fly the plane right when I said that?” he asked his former campaign manager Jeff Roe. “Let me tell you the politically easy option is to stand up and pledge your allegiance”.
“What I do know is that everyone of us has an obligation to follow our conscience, to speak the truth, and truth is unchanging”, he said.
Cruz also told one of the delegates that moving forward, he’d suggest that Trump listen to his speech to understand how to move forward, as he outlined his criteria in his convention speech.
