Sonny Bill gives his RWC medal to young fan
The Rugby World Cup final was a night to remember for Sonny Bill Williams as New Zealand became the first team in history to retain the Webb Ellis Cup, beating Australia 34-17.
Williams comforts the youngster after he was tackled by a steward.
“For myself, he’s just a coach that I want to play for, and I am pretty sure most of the boys feel the same way”.
The young fan was quickly tackled by a security guard before Williams waved him off and helped the lad to his feet.
New Zealand made history by retaining the Webb Ellis Cup, but Williams said he was happy to give away his commemorative medal. “That’s more special than having it hanging up on my wall at home”.
It did not say why, however.
Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale had little chance as Nonu bolted over to give the All Blacks the ideal start to the second half.
The kind gesture comes after Williams is believed to have offered two tickets to the All Blacks’ semi-final victory over South Africa last weekend to Syrian refugees.
“I’m pretty exhausted but relieved and really overwhelmed in terms of what happened”, he said.
“I just try and stay in the moment and do that job as best I can”. In sport, you’re going to have a victor and a loser and thank God we were winners. “But what we can see from this guy, he’s incredibly genuine”.
After the match, a young All Blacks supporter called Charlie Lines rushed onto the field looking for an autograph; after security moved in on the kid (who at five-foot-nothing, is clearly a major threat), Williams intervened.
