Sony Confirms That Your PS4 Can Play PS2 Games
Emulators mimic the environment of a specific computing environment, in this case the environment of the PlayStation 2 console.
The games will be made playable through PlayStation 4’s PS2 emulator that was released into our star systems with little or no fanfare from Sony. He declined to elaborate further.
With Microsoft bringing backwards compatibility to the Xbox One, it’s good to see Sony isn’t simply resting on its laurels what with a massive sales lead the world over, PS2 games on the PS4 would give a healthy boost to the number of exclusives available on the PS4, a point of contention for many a fan at this juncture. Specifically, “We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation”, a Sony representative said.
It appears that PlayStation 4 finally has the long talked about ability to run select PlayStation 2 games, with the PS2 Star Wars titles included in the Star Wars Classics bundle seemingly running through an emulator, rather than being ported to PS4 hardware.

Now it seems the platform holder has managed to get PS2 games working, at the very least. The testers also noted that there was a method to emulate the PS2 memory card to allow players to save their games as they played.
Having a functioning PS2 emulator running on the PS4 begs the question of if, or when, further titles from the classic console’s library will be released for the PS4.
While the PS4 does currently offer backwards compatibility, it’s for PS3 games and happens via a subscription service called PlayStation Now, which streams those games – which you need to re-purchase – over the internet.
There’s still no official word from Sony on the matter, but they will be holding their next big press briefing at PlayStation Experience early next month, so they could be preparing to make a few sort of announcement then.
