Sony Decides To Help PS Vita Port of The Banner Saga
That’s not to say that production for the handheld has stopped completely, as Sony will still let third-party developers work on the platform, but it seemed like the days of the Vita were nearly over. The original company working on the ports shut down in May 2015. “I have been excited about the Vita port since day one, and I would love to see the Banner Saga running on my own Vita”, wrote Stoic Technical director John Watson in a message board post.
Now, the game’s developer, Mike Bithell, has come out with an announcement for the release date of the game’s PlayStation Vita version.
Stoic scrambled, found a new company (Versus Evil) to continue porting its game to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, and they started reworking on the development in August of this year.
Now things are suddenly looking up for the Vita version.
That announcement offered nothing on the PS Vita front, a platform the game was announced for alongside the PS4 version. Unfortunately, the game’s developers were not able to keep their promise of bringing the game to the PlayStation Vita as they had previously announced.
However, it Sony and software developer Versus Evil have partnered up to deliver a Vita port of The Banner Saga, meaning that it is coming to the Sony handheld after all. The game was developed by a relatively small team for a relatively small budget, though after it received favorable reviews it gained a modest following.
Volume will be cross buy so owners of the PS4 version will have access to the game on PS Vita when it is released. Our recommendation: If you’re a PlayStation developer looking for help, talk to your Sony account rep. “Happy Holidays”, tweeted Sony’s Gio Corsi this past week.
The Banner Saga is a strategy RPG with a norse-inspired story that launch to commercial success and critical acclaim back in 2014 when it was release for the PC, Mac, and mobile devices. They will also have a hand in the game’s profits when it is released.
