Sony finally brings external hard drive support to the PS4
A release date for the 4.50 has yet to be confirmed. Plenty enough to get excited about, especially if you’re not a fan of having to delete games and re-download them from the cloud just to manage your available space.
As for what’s coming with 4.50, codenamed Sasuke, there’s a whole lot of good news.
Whatever the case, Sony adding external hard drive support is a big deal, as well as long overdue: Both the Xbox One, to say nothing of Nintendo’s Wii U, have supported external storage for years. You simply plug the external hard drive into your PS4, and you instantly have extra room to store more games you’ll probably never find the time to play.
The PlayStation 4 supports external storage mediums of up to 8TB in size. You’ll also get quick access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customise which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only getting the notifications you want. The update will allow you to watch 3D movies using the PlayStation headset and your PS4.
PS4 System Software update 4.5.0 will also include a feature that’ll allow you to apply a custom wallpaper as the background image for your PS4’s home screen. The Quick Menu has been redesigned again, making it more accessible and easier to use. Previously, giving your PS4 more memory meant cracking the system open with a screwdriver and swapping out the drives. Sony has removed the tabs on the left of the display that filtered notifications by category. With the new firmware its design occupies less part of the screen and you will have more options to create and join groups without leaving the game. The aim with these changes is to keep you in the game as much as possible. The Live from PlayStation app will also now show all screenshots shared publicly by users. A new system update will finally add the feature to Sony’s signature game box, along with a handful of other useful abilities, ranging from cosmetic upgrades to VR functionality.
