Sooners vs Wildcats: Live updates, fan reaction during Oklahoma and Kansas
Now they prepare to face a Kansas State Wildcats team that came close to getting the upset win over TCU.
OU quarterback Baker Mayfield must’ve eaten his Wheaties for breakfast on Saturday morning, because he was dialed in from the start of this Big 12 matchup. The team has 106 yards receiving, 8 catches and two touchdowns so far in the game. Wide out Sterling Shepard had a pair of touchdown receptions on 83 yards receiving.
Many years ago, before Bill Snyder got Kansas State to the level of perennial bowl-game qualifier, the Wildcats played at Oklahoma every season. “That is what we thought they were going to do, but they came out slinging it, they had the wind”. The Sooners faced a fourth and two at midfield, and Bob Stoops chose to let the Sooners go for it instead of punting. What made Oklahoma so dynamic on the ground was the fact that four players had at least 30 yards. Mayfield connected with Dede Westbrook five plays later and the lead was 35-0.
When it rains, it pours. Striker will put K-State quarterback Joe Hubener in his sights and make it uncomfortable for him all day long, and when the Wildcat QB does unleash a throw downfield, he better be mindful of Sanchez’s whereabouts.
Oklahoma (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) opened the scoring 64 seconds into the game, taking the ball 75 yards in five plays to take the early 7-0 lead as Mayfield connected with Shepard for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Mayfield was flawless on the drive, completing all four of his passes for 71 yards.
Mayfield threw his third touchdown pass three minutes into the second quarter, connecting with Shepard on a 28-yard pass to push the lead to 21-0.
While the OU offense was flourishing, the defense was dominating. Cook gave the Wildcats a quick infusion of offense with a 13-yard run on his third play, but then the offense stalled and Kansas State remained scoreless. The home team has lost five consecutive games in this series…. The secondary was impressive all night with both Sanchez and Thomas locking up the outside.
It was an incredible bounce back performance for a defense that was manhandled by Texas just a week before.
Key stat: Mayfield completed 8 of 10 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore defensive tackle Will Geary also set three new careers with eight tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in the game. Neal was without a touchdown, but his aggressiveness throughout helped extend OU drives and put them in good field position.
Details for Saturday’s game are below. He also leads team rushing. Oklahoma will look to continue the momentum when it hosts Texas Tech next Saturday.
