Sound Off for September 16th: Boy suspended for bringing homemade clock to
Ahmed brought the clock to school and showed it to his teacher.
President Obama tweeted, “Cool clock, Ahmed”. The Dallas Morning News, which broke the story, reported Mohamed was a member of the robotics club in junior high, and was looking for something similar as he started high-school.
When the clock’s alarm went off in another lesson, the teacher asked Ahmed to bring the device to her, at which point she allegedly said it “looks like a bomb”. “He was then fingerprinted before being released to his family, who say he received a three-day suspension from school”. “We should inspire more kids like you to like science”, Obama, 54, wrote.
The incident has generated an outpouring of support for Ahmed and condemnation of Irving’s police and school district.
Ahmed Mohamed, 14, was arrested after his teacher mistook the timepiece for an explosive device.
“We will take all necessary precautions to protect our students and keep our school community as safe as possible”, Weaver said.
CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg expressed his felicitations to the teen Ahmed Mohamed for his fearless invention and extended his invitation to his campus.
“I made a clock”.
The White House invited Ahmed to Astronomy Night in October, an annual event that brings together astronauts, scientists and other professionals.
During the interrogation, Ahmed never said the clock was a bomb, police said.
Boyd said his original meeting with Ahmed’s father was canceled, but he hopes to connect with him today.
A police spokesman said that, throughout the interview, Ahmed had maintained that he built only a clock, but said the boy was unable to give a “broader explanation” as to what it would be used for. We live in an age where you can’t take things like that to school. “Keep building”, Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations said the heavy-handed response is particularly suspicious given that Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne has claimed that Muslims are plotting to impose Sharia law in America.
Later on Wednesday, addressing a press conference, Mohamed recounted the absurd series of events that led to his arrest and thanked all the people who supported him, including President Obama.
