South Africa pair in 501 stand for Lancashire
Their North West opponents had a tremendous day at the crease and finished the first day’s play on 452-2 thanks to a record breaking third wicket stand from Ashwell Prince and former Glamorgan skipper Alviro Petersen, who hit an unbeaten 205 to put the league leaders in the ascendancy.
GLAMORGAN felt England’s pain after losing a vital toss in their LV=County Championship clash with Lancashire.
In all, Petersen and Prince’s partnership was the 13th largest for any wicket in first-class history, with both batsmen achieving career-best scores.
Prince scored his profession-greatest 261 which included 34 fours and 7 sixes.
Glamorgan finally parted the pair when Prince was out for a career-best 261.
Lancashire declared innings on 698 for 5, which is also their fifth highest-ever score.
Glamorgan’s wicket-keeper, Mark Wallace, later told BBC Radio that it was an absolute World class efficiency by each the batsmen.
Petersen was delighted with his display but refused to get carried away, saying: “Days like this in cricket don’t come often, when you are in you try and kick on to make it count”.
Petersen fell six overs later to the same bowler for 286, which came off 376 balls and featured 35 fours and two maximums.
“That batting was almost as good as you are ever more likely to see”.
But that was as good as it got for Glamorgan as the third wicket pair went on the rampage and when they added 246 they broke the previous record for the third wicket against Glamorgan set by Graeme Fowler and David Hughes at Old Trafford in 1983.
