COLUMBIA, S.C.- New South Carolina coach Will Muschamp is ready for his second chance in the Southeastern Conference. On Steve Spurrier “Coach Spurrier raised the expectation level here and we’re going to continue pushing that”.
The 44-year-old Muschamp spent this past season as Auburn’s defensive coordinator after being fired as coach of the Gators. On his sideline actions “I think absolutely there’s a huge difference in being a head coach and defensive coordinator (as far as demeanor)”.
Gary may very well commit to Auburn, he likely won’t play for the South Carolina Gamecocks now that Muschamp is running that program.
University trustees approved Muschamp’s 5-year, $16 million deal earlier Monday morning.
Under the terms of the contract, Muschamp will make a base salary of $3 million in the 2016 season. “The first year there is a little adjustment and that fifth year you are doing a little bit better”. “He’s as good an assistant coach, and as loyal an assistant coach, as I’ve ever had on my staff”.
Muschamp amassed a 28-21 record as Florida’s coach, which included an SEC East title in 2012 when he led the team to an 11-2 record and No. 9 finish the final AP Poll.
Tanner told reporters: “I can’t speak for anything that he put out, but I would tell you that it’s inaccurate”. “We left the program much better than we inherited it. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but we graduated our players, had the highest grade-point average in school history for consecutive semesters my last four semesters there, and we did things the right way”.
The fiery Muschamp led the Auburn defense this past fall.
Of course, this was a controversial move by Muschamp that cost his team a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the 2015 Iron Bowl. Auburn personnel had to hold Muschamp back during the tirade. Interim coach Shawn Elliott imbued some energy into the program.
As is standard for coaching contracts, he’s also eligible for incentives, which, if he were to hit all of those goals, could earn him over $1 million a year.
