South Carolina comes up short in ‘home game’ at LSU
South Carolina linebacker T.J. Holloman (11) attempts to tackle LSU running back Leonard Fournette (7) during the first half of an NCAA college football game in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday, October 10, 2015. Previously, LSU’s fastest to 1,000 yards rushing was Charles Alexander, who hit the mark on his 175th carry, in the seventh game of 1977.
Fournette read a prepared statement stating that he would support South Carolina flood victims by auctioning off his game jersey to help raise money.
Fournette’s family was impacted by Hurricane Katrina, so you can tell it means a lot to him to help out the folks in South Carolina.
Down 3-0 in the first quarter, the Tigers faced a third-and-long, which isn’t ideal given their passing struggles so far this season.
“It’s a motto that goes with LSU: young guys are gonna play big roles”, Fournette said. “Hoped we could get a few turnovers, but I’ll be danged every time they fumbled it one of their guys was right there”.
“I just get frustrated watching our guys”, Spurrier said. “As you’ve seen with that (touchdown) run, they block for me”.
Dural and Malachi Dupre both sat for the first two plays behind Trey Quinn and John Diarse, but they came to work on Saturday. He is ninth in the league in total offense with 220 yards a game as he has rushed for 116 yards. We haven’t trailed until this game, so there hasn’t been really a need to throw the ball. “This is Tiger Stadium at its best”.
With quarterback Lorenzo Nunez nursing a sore shoulder, Perry Orth started for South Carolina (2-4, 0-4).
Lock, starting his second game for the Tigers in place of suspended starter Maty Mauk, completed 16 of 39 passes for 151 yards and two interceptions.
Guice was named the Freshman of the Week. And Tigers fans, who normally boo visiting teams as they enter the stadium, applauded the Gamecocks as they took and left the field. After a pair of dropped passes early in the game on Saturday, it appeared that more of the same would be on the way against South Carolina. With LSU up 14-10, the Gamecocks were driving late in the second quarter with a chance of taking the lead going to halftime, which could have been huge for their momentum.
Regardless of Guice’s career day and Williams’ two touchdowns on 61 yards, Miles set one mission for the LSU offense today, hoping to establish balance between the air and ground game – giving the LSU passing game plenty of opportunities. They’re not going to be getting any pats on the back for doing the right thing though, even if it’s the only time they ever have. “At the same time though, it felt like an away game”.
The Tigers actually had more passing yards (135) than rushing yards (103) in the first two quarters against South Carolina.
South Carolina planned to resume classes Monday, and Tanner said he was optimistic South Carolina would be able to host next week’s game against Vanderbilt.
