South Carolina House approves bill removing Confederate flag
But little by little, the amendment proposals gave out, and after 1:00 a.m. Thursday legislators finally were able to vote on the bill – and passed it.

The debate about the symbolism of the Confederate flag was reignited after last month’s shooting deaths of nine black worshipers at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. “And if any of you vote to amend, you are ensuring that this flag will fly beyond Friday”, Horne screamed on the state House floor.

The defenders, however, deny its association with slavery, saying it represents the history and heritage of the state. If it’s approved, that would force the Senate to reconsider the measure.
House Democrats held a news conference on Tuesday, asking their colleagues to push the bill through without tacking on amendments, which would slow down the debates.
Several representatives also spoke on the proposed amendment, including Rep. Neal Collins, a Republican from Pickens County, who said he believed the flag should come down and announced that he would not be casting anymore votes this week, as he would be traveling to Las Vegas.
Horne had grown tired of one new proposed amendment after the next to the clean bill handed to the House by the Senate.
As House members deliberated well into the night, there were tears of anger and shared memories of Civil War ancestors. Under the language approved in the bill, the flag must be removed by noon on the effective date of the bill. The amendment failed after nearly an hour delay.
Haley is expected to formally approve the legislation Thursday.
After the Civil War, the flag was first flown over the dome of South Carolina’s Capitol in 1961 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the war. I am a lifelong South Carolinian.

The debate began less than a day after the USA House voted to ban the display of Confederate flags at historic federal cemeteries in the Deep South.
