South Carolina Small Plane Crash Leaves 4 Dead, Officials Say
Authorities say a small plane crashed near a lake in South Carolina, killing all four people on board.
About 8 p.m., emergency crews were retrieving the bodies from the wreckage. They are still working to determine the tail number of the plane. Conditions around the airport were “dismal” Friday afternoon, the official said.
Investigators say the plane made a may-day call around 3:35 p.m.
The men were flying from Warsaw, Indiana, to Clemson, South Carolina, to attend Saturday’s Notre Dame-Clemson game. The crash is in a remote area of the lake.
Warsaw City Councilman Charles Smith, the owner of the plane and a certified pilot, died in the crash, as did his son, Scott Smith, sprint vehicle racer Tony Elliott and former Tippecanoe Valley High School football coach Scott Bibler, WNDU reports. The Oconee County Coroner is on his way to the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are en route to crash.
