South Carolina taps O-line coach Shawn Elliott as interim coach
In the early 1990s, Spurrier turned college football upside down in the Southeastern Conference and across the nation.
But for a man who’s been coaching college football since the ’70s, Spurrier’s not-so-good season won’t have much of an impact on his legacy. In the meantime, though, here are five names which should probably be on the USC AD’s mind.
Yes, the Fun “N” Gun has been irreversibly replaced by a text-and-tweet game with which Spurrier is no longer comfortable.
South Carolina head football coach has resigned – not retired, according to his words – from the University of South Carolina as the winningest coach in Gamecocks history. South Carolina was struggling and the gregarious and once innovative coach was a big reason why.
Spurrier won the 1996 national championship and six SEC titles at Florida, where he coached for 12 seasons. “Now previous year I was 69, we were 11-2 and there was no question about my age”.
South Carolina’s inconsistency on offense this season has surely frustrated Spurrier, a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at Florida who played for San Francisco and Tampa Bay in the NFL.
“It’s time for me to get out of the way”, Spurrier said. Peyton Manning returned for his senior season at Tennessee ’cause “he wanted to be a three-time star” of the defunct Citrus Bowl; in any case, you could not spell Citrus “without U-T”, Steve Spurrier remarked. “He said the athletic director interviewed him in his office and then informed him of the decision”.
At 70, Spurrier’s tenure at South Carolina likely represents his last job leading a major football program. Spurrier’s 134 SEC wins are second only to Bryant’s 159 league victories.
– There is a staff meeting at Williams-Brice Stadium on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. As of this writing, Spurrier is scheduled to meet with the media at noon for his normal Tuesday press conference.
“We haven’t lost it”, Spurrier said in the summer. “I’m pulling for Shawn”, he said. Before Spurrier, the Gamecocks’ best season was 10 wins in 1984.
South Carolina plays at home against Vanderbilt (2-3, 0-2) on Saturday.
