South Korea president hopes for better Japan ties from three-way summit
South Korea and Japan are major trading partners, and economic exchanges have largely continued throughout the diplomatic freeze, along with practical defense cooperation.
Existing UN Security Council sanctions have slowed but not stopped North Korea’s pursuit of a capability to deliver a nuclear strike on the US mainland. She was given a 21-gun salute on the parade field in front of the Pentagon, before she inspected a guard of honour.
Park said the trilateral summit would be held in Seoul in early November, after a gap of 3-1/2-years.
The news conference was held after their summit in Obama’s office, the Oval Office, and official lunch in the Cabinet Room. And it plays a critical role in advancing freedom in the region.
“I hope that South Korea and the USA will expand co-operation in a comprehensive and strategic” manner over the issue, Park said in a meeting with Carter. Seoul and Washington’s statement on North Korea’s nuclear programs comes amid speculation Pyongyang could launch a long-range rocket. Both sides want to deepen and broaden relations, including into so-called frontier areas like cybersecurity and space cooperation.
In the coming months, the outcomes of democratic elections in Burma and the White House’s push for congressional ratification of a 12-nation Pacific Rim trade pact will help determine whether Obama’s efforts to expand USA leadership in Asia take root.
The Park administration has been trying to bring the United States and China together as part of a strategy to push forward on North Korea. “We believe China could and should do more on the North Korea issue”.
Park said that North Korea and its young leader needed to display “genuine willingness” to give up its nuclear program.
That doesn’t necessarily reflect strains in a U.S.-South Korean relationship that has remained strong on Park’s watch.
At a banquet in the evening, Park said the bilateral alliance is growing more “dynamic”.
Park’s overture to Asia’s largest economy had been a cause for concern among USA officials who anxious Park was steering South Korea toward closer relations with China, while moving away from the existing security alliance with Japan and the United States.
“The alliance has been evolving and is dynamic, and together we are moving toward a brighter future”.
Seven TPP signatories – Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam and Brunei – are also reported to be involved in the Chinese-led Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
“Unification is something that no one can really predict”, Park said. Kim was absent, whereas Park stood close to Xi.
South Korea is eager to see Abe make political decisions to remove the perennial thorn in the bilateral relationship.
