South Korea president’s office explains Viagra purchase
South Korea President Park Geun-hye’s office has confirmed revelations by an opposition lawmaker that it purchased about 360 erectile dysfunction Viagra pills and the generic version of the drug in December. After the endorsement process, the President plans to sign it into law. Political analysts say an impeachment motion against Park has a good chance of passing.
“But she won’t be able to bring any new legal initiative or raise a new policy agenda”, Kim said.
If Park is impeached, she’ll be immediately stripped of her constitutional powers until the Constitutional Court can rule on her fate. The smaller People’s Party also made a decision to pursue impeachment.
Another presidential aide wascharged with leaking confidentialstate documents.
Jeong’s response comes after the formation of the South Korean special committee on last Thursday, responsible for conducting the investigations on those who are accused of having ties with the Park-Choi gate.
Park may think that the court would similarly overturn a vote to impeach her. “There is no proof yet that Park took the millions for herself”, Han said.
In 2015, President Park met separately one by one with the eight conglomerate chiefs after an open meeting with scores of business heads in the presidential office. The general public, sensing rank political opportunism by the president’s critics, rewarded Roh’s Uri Party with a majority of seats at the next parliamentary election in 2004.
On Tuesday an opposition party lawmaker revealed that Park’s office previous year bought hundreds of pills which can treat erectile dysfunction, including Viagra and the generic version of the drug. Lee Yong-ho, the People’s Party floor leader. Both urged Park to step down as president first.
While the public has vociferously called for Park to resign, Dave Kang, a professor of global relations and South Korea specialist at the University of Southern California, told CNN that the main opposition parties had not yet backed the public’s claims. On 12 of the 16 working days this month, she took part in no scheduled events. As the governing party holds nearly 128 parliamentary seats, the opposition bloc is required to gain support from at least 30 Saenuri lawmakers.
Meanwhile, the ruling Saenuri Party downplayed the meaning of the interim investigation results, stressing it is not a foregone conclusion.
“Impeachment proceedings need flawless preparations as much is possible”, Choo Mi-ae, head of the Democratic Party told a party meeting, adding the best scenario was for Park to step down. Of the nine justices of the court, six must support the impeachment. Park will not attend the meeting, and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, now in Peru to attend the APEC summit, will return later in the day. At Tuesday’s meeting a bill on appointing an independent counsel for a special investigation into the high-profile scandal centered around Choi Soon-sil is expected to be passed and then approved by the president.
“We have chose to join efforts with civic groups, other opposition parties and even members of the ruling party who want Park to be impeached”, Ki said.
“We bought them, but they were left unused”, said Jung Youn-kuk, spokesman of the presidential Blue House.
“The president clearly said she will accept it”, he said, referring to Park’s second apology issued earlier this month. She, however, is now refusing to cooperate with the prosecutors’ probe.
