South Park: The Fractured but Whole season pass announced
South Park: The Fractured But Whole has around twice the content that The Stick of Truth did, and I felt like there was more variety in missions, combat, and things to do in general.
Despite the relatively small map, it can feel at times like Fractured But Whole has a case of ‘Ubisoft Syndrome, ‘ where there’s too much to do or keep track of at any given time – but hey, at least there are no radio towers to climb, and the collectibles themselves can earn a chuckle from fans who recognize the inside jokes.
But this super hero-themed follow-up isn’t just a repeat.
The Fractured But Whole never lets you forget that it’s a South Park game, with constant deviations into immature, insensitive humor.
South Park TFBW review: What’s the story? After a few delays that prevented it from hitting its original target previous year, The Fractured But Whole has finally released, and after playing it I can say that fans will enjoy it.
Another ability in The Fractured But Whole is to craft items for you to use. It looks exactly like the cartoon. The writing is sharp and witty, with numerous jokes landing their mark, especially the ones that take shots as the comics industry.
The Stick of Truth had that whole “replicate the show” thing going for it too. Since there is no way to change your additional three teammates once a battle is started, you’ll have to back out and restart the fight.
The Fractured but Whole is more complex. Generally, you don’t have to stress much about it and can equip what feels right without losing much power.
‘Member The Stick of Truth’s combat system? The game states tells you not to worry about that though because your skin color won’t affect difficulty in combat, just every other aspect of your life.
It doesn’t pose much of a challenge as you increase your Might via acquired Artifacts, bumping up your attributes to become a God-like character in the process, but it is an very bad lot of fun. It’s that kind of naivety that reminds us that, despite a f***-per-minute ratio that’d make Tony Montana blush, these are just kids playing make-believe. Even though this program may have lost some of the shock value it once possessed, there is little doubt that South Park is still trying to push the limits of what you can put on television. Depending on the class of character (being the new kid, you’re given a unique opportunity to mix classes at Cartman’s discretion), attacks might only target a single square and perform a high amount of damage or perhaps cover a wider horizontal area but instead, apply status effects and reduced damage.
It’s also a great source of humor. One for South Park fans and one for those who don’t like or aren’t familiar with the series. This time, the kids have split into two separate teams after a fight over the movie and TV plans for their billion dollar media franchise.
Moreso than its predecessor, South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a game that allows you to truly craft your vision of The New Kid. But then again, if you aren’t a fan of South Park why would you even pick up this game? You can choose character classes that best suit your ability to either be the one on the frontline doling out punishment, or the one acting as support to your allies. You don’t have many clothing options at first, but you quickly discover more outfits as you explore the town. You can find upgrades, usually in silly forms like a fidget spinner, to improve your character’s stats and also gain friends to aid you in battle against sixth graders, immigrants, crab people, and a whole host of other enemies.
Above: Super heroes can take super poos. It’s still impressive, but some of the wow factor is gone.
Meanwhile, little has changed in the town of South Park itself. I forgave some of The Stick of Truth’s simple combat because it was so cool to get to walk around a digital South Park.
The Fractured But Whole also incorporates different battle types that can make defeating enemies more hard as the game progresses. The Moses Summon, for example, which you can get by completing Father Maxi’s quest at the church, will heal your entire team, regardless of where they are on the battlefield. Combat is lengthy early on, and it takes an equally long time to unlock more and more ways to make you and your party more powerful. This can produce some frustrating moments as it feels like The Fractured But Whole is punishing you for playing a specific way. Thankfully, the first attempt, Stick of Truth, was a rather entertaining, yet limited RPG that thrust players into this zany animated world. But for us, as both South Park and RPG fans, it’s a great game that stands-out as much for its excellence as it will for its controversy.
If you need to resupply on items, head to the shop in Eric’s house. But if you’re a South Park fan who wouldn’t mind a fairly decent romp through a faux Marvel and DC face-off then you’re probably onto a victor here.
Speaking of the world of South Park: The Fractured But Whole, you can bring up the phone screen pictured just below by pressing the middle button on the Dualshock 4, or the select button on the Xbox One controller.
