Southern launches Devon Gales Fund for injured football player
He continues to have movement in his upper body and remains in good spirits and will remain at Athens Regional until he is released to return to Baton Rouge for further treatment. Gales, a sophomore who is 5-8 and 158, underwent surgery Sunday to stabilize the fractures.
Gales parents were not able to attend the game, but they were flown by to the hospital by the University of Georgia.
“I think that was really healthy for him and the family”, Richt said. “One thing goes wrong and just like that, he’s laying down and no one knows what’s going on”.
A few bogus GoFundMe accounts were set up in the days following the injury. “That’s the question”, said senior running back Malcolm Crockett.
He had a big scrimmage making a few nice catches including a touchdown to close fall camp, but the best place for him to make an immediate impact was on special teams.
Gales suffered several fractures in his neck that were stabilized.
“As a walk-on, a former walk-on myself, when you come out, you have a lot to prove to everybody and prove to yourself”, said Tillery. So something like that is just typical of Devon, but I just hate to see something happen like that.
As for his feelings on Morgan’s on-the-field play, Richt said he has no concerns over the player whose 351 points has him as the SEC’s active leader.
While prayers continue to pour in for Southern University’s Devon Gales following last week’s frightful accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, Georgia head coach Mark Richt was asked about kicker Marshall Morgan, the Bulldog player who collided with the wide receiver on the kickoff when the incident occurred.
A few of UGA’s medical staffers were the first to respond.
“We’re trying to cover him up with as much love as we can and let him know that we care, let him know that we’re here to help”, Richt said earlier this week. However, the account established by the Southern University Foundation (https://netcommunity.sus.edu/the-devon-gales-fund) will go directly to assist Gales and his family.
