One group says it’s OK to start screening at age 50, another at age 45 and yet another at age 40. Who are you going to believe, and what are you supposed to do with this confusing and conflicting information? A crowd gathered at the Eufaula/Barbour County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, October 12, for a Breast Cancer Luncheon that was hosted by Medical Center Barbour.
Surrounded by her husband, her pastor and her pastor’s wife, Bonnie Kuhns sat in a hospital bed on September 22 waiting for the inevitable – a double-breast mastectomy. “It is very uncommon for a woman to have a lumpectomy and then develop cancer in another part of the breast”. There are risk factors that may increase an individual’s chance of getting a disease – some can be avoided (obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, diet high in saturated fats), while other risk factors cannot be avoided (family history, genes).
Johnson said she is grateful for everyone she met during the process and encourages women to get their mammograms.
