SpaceX Gets Back In The Game With Falcon 9 Launch
The rocket’s massive first stage executed a series of maneuvers that brought it back to Cape Canaveral in Florida.
U.S. space company SpaceX has managed to successfully land an unmanned rocket upright after a launch for the first time in history.
But this time, video images on SpaceX’s live webcast showed the tall, white portion of the rocket – known as the first stage – appearing to settle down firmly and stick the landing.
The 11 satellites were also successfully deployed about 20 minutes after the rocket’s launch, making it a dual-success story for Elon Musk’s space firm. The rocket, carrying several communications satellites for Orbcomm, Inc., is the first launc…
In June 2014 the Falcon 9 had exploded en route to the International Space Station.
The mission also marked SpaceX’s return to flight.
In Ashlee Vance’s 2015 book, “Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the quest for a fantastic future”, the SpaceX founder discusses his relationship with Bezos and the rivalry between the two companies.
Falcon 9 Full Thrust landed on an area 2/3 of a mile wide far larger than the floating landing pad in the ocean Space X has used in the past.
SpaceX even posted a video and photographs showing the Falcon’s safe landing. The rocket landing was just icing on the cake.
Orbital rockets are the most powerful type of rocket there is because they generate enough speed and power to send payloads into orbit around Earth, hence “orbital”.
“Here she comes back”, Eisenberg said via Twitter, sharing a photo of the returning booster.
The landing – 10 minutes after lift off – was six miles away on a reinforced concrete surface.
“The Falcon 9 rocket costs about $16 million to build … but the cost of the propellant, which is mostly oxygen and a gas, is only about $200,000”, Musk said.
Mr Musk has said the ability to return its rockets to Earth so they can be refurbished and re-flown would slash his company’s operational costs in the burgeoning and highly competitive private space launch industry. In the meantime, he’s working to transform the SpaceX Dragon capsules from cargo ships into real spaceships for crews traveling to and from the orbiting station.
