Spain reports first known European case of Zika virus
Colombia has confirmed the first three deaths of patients infected with the Zika virus who had contracted a seemingly related disease that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis.
John Armstrong to amend the declaration of public health emergency to include Broward County Thursday since this new case was detected.
Scott has also asked the CDC to provide about 1,000 Zika antibody test kits in order to begin testing people for the virus. Under Colombian law, abortion is legal for women whose foetuses show a malformation that makes life unviable, if the pregnancy was a result of rape, or if the woman’s health is in danger.
Researchers have identified evidence of Zika infection in 17 of these cases, either in the baby or in the mother, but have not confirmed that Zika can cause microcephaly.
The possible breakthrough comes after the discovery Zika virus can be transmitted through sex, with mosquito and animal bites previously the only known means of spreading the virus. Health officials recommend covering up, using insect repellant and keeping windows closed or screened. “We are prepared, that there is no reason to panic”.
“We can prepare for the worse and hope for the best”, Scott said.
