Spain strikers find their scoring touch at Euro 2016
Defending European champions Spain booked its place in the last 16 round of Euro 2016 on Friday with a convincing 3-0 win against Turkey in Nice.
Two players who stole the show, especially in the first half, were Nolito and Alvaro Morata; the two combined to perfection to give Spain the lead in the 34th minute with the 29-year-old delivering the ideal assist for the Real Madrid man.
Then, three minutes later, it was Nolito’s turn as the Celta Vigo forward cashed in on Mehmet Topal’s miscued header to guide the ball into the corner.
Striker Burak Yilmaz threatened the Spain goal shortly after Morata’s second goal, but his wild shot went high and wide.
Turkey need to beat the Czech Republic in their final match and hope other results go their way to have any chance of progressing as one of the four best third-placed sides from the six groups. “They’re a very important team, a special team”. Social network users mocked Turkish President Erdogan after the Turkish Football Team was defeated by Spain in Euro 2016, reports RIA Novosti.
Three minutes later, Spain doubled their advantage as Nolito capitalized on confusion in the Turkish defense.
“I’m very happy for the match the team played, very happy for the goals but above all for being here”.
“I’m very happy about the match we played, very happy about the goals and very happy to be here. We have spent a lot of time together, we’ve laughed, and it shows on the pitch”, he told TV channel Telecinco. They’re always looking for something, when the team is doing well they say the strikers won’t score.
Coach Fatih Terim criticized the booing and said “it made an impact on our team”.
Turkey captain Arda Turan struggled to influence the game and was loudly booed by his own fans.
Gundogan tweeted: “The national team did not perform well today but what upset me most was the way my brother Arda Turan was treated”.
Croatia’s meeting with the Czech Republic was marred by flares thrown on to the pitch, for Spain the flair was already on the pitch from the kick-off with Andrés Iniesta and company playing a different game to their rivals for long periods.
