Spain, Switzerland secure spots in Euro ’16
Continental champions for the first time in 1964, they are unbeaten in 32 home qualifiers, winning their last 17 in the Euros since a 1-0 loss to Greece in Zaragoza in June 2003.
Spain secured its Euro 2016 spot by easily defeating Luxembourg 4-0 at home, while Switzerland trounced San Marino 7-0 to clinch its berth for the tournament in France.
Initial reports in the Spanish media suggested Manchester City’s Silva has suffered a right ankle sprain, whilst Juventus striker Morata has been taken to hospital for tests on what is feared could be a broken fibula. In the final round Ukraine will face Spain in a home match and Slovakia will play an away match against Luxembourg.
“We won, that’s always a major positive”.
Theo Walcott bagged his seventh goal of the season as England maintained their 100 per cent qualifying record with a narrow and largely uninspiring 2-0 win over Estonia.
The 29-year-old started the game for Spain against Luxembourg, however, was substituted off after just nine minutes following a tackle by Lars Gerson.
In Group C, Ukraine defeated Macedonia 2-0 at Nacionalna Arena Filip II Makedonski – Skopje to come level on points with Slovakia who also have 19 points.
Needing a win to be certain of making it to UEFA EURO 2016, Slovakia needed a win to secure a second place, but instead failed to score for the third qualifier in succession.
Michael Lang put the hosts ahead in St Gallen before Pajtim Kasami, Admir Mehmedi, Eren Derdiyok, Gokhan Inler, Johan Djourou and Breel Embolo each netted.
“That is important, because it fluctuates with the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings and I am only hoping I have not been misled that we are now safe to be seeded”, England coach Roy Hodgson said.
And Cazorla rounded off the scoring with the best goal of the night when he thundered in a shot from the edge of the box to seal Spain’s ticket to France in style.
In Group G, Russia, Sweden and Montenegro had been locked in a desperate battle for qualification behind runaway leaders Austria.
