Special edition BMW M4 concept to debut at Pebble Beach
It continues the tradition of the original M3 Evolution (1988), M3 Sport Evolution (1990), the M3 GT (1995), the M3 CSL (2003), and the M3 GTS (2010), by bringing a stripped out and more focused setup. Additional details on the new BMW M4 GTS Concept haven’t been released at this point and chances are they will be made public at the Pebble Beach event, where the model will be officially presented to the public.
The Concept M4 GTS debuts this week at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Then there was the MotoGP M4 safety auto that featured a water-injection system BMW said was destined for production. In addition, a wide front air intake optimizes airflow and minimizes front axle lift.
The wheels themselves are wrapped in high-performance Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres, measuring 265/35 and 285/30, front to back, respectively. BMW says the mixed-size tyres “provide the ideal conduit for the stand-out dynamic attributes of the BMW Concept M4 GTS“.
The water injection system introduced by BMW M Division sees the engineers using the physical effect of water when vaporising to draw the required energy from the ambient medium.
Actual performance specifications weren’t announced, but expect those to come when BMW confirms that the M4 GTS will be heading to dealerships in the near future. When the water vaporises, the intake air cools significantly. This allows for higher boost pressure and earlier injection timing, resulting in a “noticeable increase in output and torque”.
Further still, to insure optimal operating temperatures across the board, BMW M has also developed a more effective cooling system for the turbocharged ‘six. The M4 GTS has a main radiator and additional radiators for the high- and low-temperature circuits, for the turbocharger and for the transmission.
The M4 looks to follow suit but BMW isn’t showing us all of its cards, yet. The one for the turbocharger has an indirect intercooler which is assisted by the electric water pump. These have the ability to actuate individual light modules separately providing full-surface and homogenous illumination. OLED technology enables extra flexibility and forges an unmistakable appearance that signals exceptional precision.
The model has been rumored for quite some time now and showcases new technologies that will head to a series production model to be unveiled at a later date, BMW has promised.
