‘Spectre’ Back on Top, Angelina Jolie’s ‘By the Sea’ Sinks
A few box office analysts were predicting this past week that “The Peanuts Movie” could overtake “Spectre” this weekend, because of middling reviews (“Spectre”), mixed word of mouth and the fact that audiences would be looking for lighter, more optimistic fare, in the wake of the Paris terrorist tragedy.
The new James Bond movie “Spectre” stayed atop the North American box office revenue tally in its second week in theaters, bringing in $35.4 million, industry estimates showed Sunday.
With an estimated .2 million, the film, like the latest Bond movie, is continuing to find audiences. Its #5 ranking is attributable to $5.8 million in receipts. The large ensemble cast includes Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Olivia Wilde, Ed Helms, and more, and although the Christmas-themed comedy could have long legs through the holiday season, Love The Coopers only earned a B- CinemaScore, which could affect its longevity.
“Spectre” should cross the $500 million mark worldwide by the end of this weekend with China expected to be particularly robust. Angelina Jolie Pitt’s “By the Sea”, however, made barely a ripple. It took in $8.4 million for CBS Films. Universal, the studio behind the picture, pegs the budget at $10 million, but industry figures believe the cost of the picture is higher, citing its extended shoot in Malta. So while it has a few way to go to reach that reported $650 million “break even” point, it’s doing well so far.
Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment’s “The 33” is a Hollywood dramatization of the 2010 Chilean mining accident that left 33 people trapped underground for 69 days. My All American came in around number twelve with just $1.4 million. i Spectre slipped 50% from last weekend, but still held on to number one. Starring Antonio Banderas, the PG-13 film was not liked by film critics. It follows similarly disappointing releases for Jolie as a director, after poorly reviewed war dramas Unbroken (which opened to $30.6 million last December) and In the Land of Blood and Honey ($18,600 in limited release in December 2011).
