‘Spectre’ breaks records worldwide
The James Bond thriller “Spectre” opened to a record-smashing $80 million overseas this weekend, even better than the last 007 blockbuster “Skyfall” did in its worldwide debut.
The latest James Bond film is the 24th installment of the long-time franchise which has made nearly $2 billion in the USA since 1963’s original, “Dr. No”.
The previous record holder for the biggest cinema opening was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was released in 2004.
The movie, which reunites director Sam Mendes and incumbent 007 Daniel Craig, has enjoyed the biggest opening at the British box office of all time. Finland generated $2.63 million and Norway $2.88 million.
In its opening few hours on Monday, the movie managed to bring in a whopping $6.4 million, across 647 cinemas, which was pretty impressive seeing as the movie opened for screenings at 8:15pm – 15 minutes after the London premiere.
Along with Samsung, Sony had offered upwards of $18 million to market Bond, and $5 million for him to hold a Xperia Z4.
The box office king this week is the new James Bond movie, “Spectre”, which is hardly a surprise because both fans and critics are raving about the movie.
The film has also set a new IMAX record, taking the highest per-location average in the company’s history with £68,000 in 47 IMAX locations. “This record-breaking support from United Kingdom audiences for what is our 24th outing is nothing short of unbelievable”, Gary Barber, CEO of MGM said in a statement.
It’s not all that hard picture the world’s most famous secret agent answering (and hanging up on) M’s phone calls on an Android, but we Americans will just have to wait until the movie comes out later this week to see for ourselves.
Spectre also starring Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Monica Bellucci and Ralph Fiennes, will release in India on November 20, 2015 in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu.
