‘Spectre’ shoots to $73 million, misses ‘Skyfall’s’ mark
Daniel Craig’s fourth turn as James Bond easily outpaced a strong showing for The Peanuts Movie, which still thrived at $45 million in its debut.
Daniel Craig’s iconic British spy executed with a $73 million tally, according to studio estimates.
At a special screening of Spectre, hosted by Omega watches, she said: “I thought personally nothing could top Skyfall and I thought we should just enjoy the ride and feel proud we made an incredible movie that people loved”. The competition was different, the weekend was different.
“That’s all I’ve ever tried to do with these films… just make the movies as memorable as possible”, he added, “Should I make another one or not make another one, I’m proud of the four I’ve made”.
Spectre released worldwide on November 6, and over the weekend managed to rake in over $200.
The 24th James Bond movie, “Spectre”, didn’t hit the astounding opening day number that its predecessor “Skyfall” did in 2012, but it still had an impressive opening weekend.
The film’s getting a lot of praise for its opening scene, for great directing, for fun action sequences and all the usual Bond stuff. It cost $100 million to make and was produced by Blue Sky, the creative force behind the “Ice Age” series.
The total domestic weekend box office was $164 million, according to Rentrak, the industry’s highest total since mid-July and a much-needed boost after what had been a quiet fall.
James Bond adventure Spectre shot down its rivals at the USA box office to debut in first place with $73m at the weekend. The new $458.4 million worldwide total also made it Scott’s highest-grossing worldwide picture.
“Brooklyn”, a 1950s-set immigrant story starring Saoirse Ronan, took in a respectable $181,000 from five theaters this weekend after opening Wednesday.
After the slump of the last few weeks, including the catastrophic finish a week ago that marked one of Hollywood’s worst weekends in seven years, audiences returned in droves and put the 2015 box office back on track for a record-breaking year.
Overall, things are looking up at the box office.
Goosebumps ($6.9 million) and Bridge of Spies ($6.0 million) rounded out the top five.
The success of the two newcomers allowed The Martian to take third with $9.3 million.
