Speculation swirls over Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris ahead of Grey Cup
Ottawa last won the CFL championship in 1976 when the Rough Riders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Tony Gabriel’s iconic last-minute 24-yard touchdown reception from Tom Clements.
The 104th Grey Cup presented by Shaw caps off a successful CFL on TSN season that saw the average audience for regular season games grow 3% overall, and 7% in the key 18-49 demographic nationwide.
Amid reports that Burris could sit and backup Trevor Harris would start, the 41-year-old trotted out onto the field late and didn’t miss a snap.
Ottawa Redblacks fans said they loved the experience outside BMO Field in Toronto, where beers sold for $4 and fans grilled hot dogs and calamari.
Uncharacteristically, Jackson bobbled the ball. After Calgary finally got something going with a Redblacks fumble later in the half, Mitchell heaved a ball that was nearly intercepted, and then heaved one that was: Ottawa’s Jeff Richards caught it just before the Redblacks end zone. Three plays later, Burris hit Lavoie again just outside the end zone, and he walked in easily for a touchdown that stretched the Ottawa lead to 17-7.
“This was a ideal setting to go out there and prove to everybody who you are”, Burris said.
Calgary needed to match Ottawa’s six points, but went three-and-out.
Mitchell finished the game with 391 yards on 28-of-38 passing with two touchdowns. He also was the Grey Cup MVP with the Stampeders in 2008 in their victory over Montreal at Olympic Stadium.
Congratulations to Henry Burris and the Ottawa RedBlacks and thank-you to the Calgary Stampeders for an fantastic season.
The Stampeders trailed most of the game – only forcing OT after rallying from a 20-point deficit against the Redblacks. An inside hand off to DaVaris Daniels resulted in a touchdown, making it 33-30 RedBlacks.
Calgary recovers their short kickoff at their 50-yard line, and their eight-play, 58-yard drive ends at the Ottawa three-yard line with Paredes’ kick sending the game into overtime (Calgary 33, Ottawa 33).
Desjardins was involved in every decision from the selection of Campbell as the head coach, to the signing of players and the development of the franchise from the ground up to entice quality players to sign in Ottawa. Bo Levi Mitchell threw three interceptions.
If Burris retires, he’ll certainly leave on a huge high, completing 35-of-46 passes for 461 yards en route to his third Grey Cup title.
For the first time in 40 years the Grey Cup belongs to an Ottawa football team!
This time the Redblacks held onto the ball, with a 31-yard pass and run by Sinopoli getting them out of the shadow of the goalposts, and they capped a time-draining drive with Early’s 29-yard field goal for a 20-7 half-time advantage.
The Ottawa defence also had a big game, containing Mitchell, the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player, and the Calgary offence. They dismantled B.C. 42-15 in the West Division final to book their berth in the Grey Cup.
